Paul First Nation

Paul First Nations
Dennis R. Paul / Special Projects

Dennis R. Paul, Dr. Paul to some, hails from the Paul First Nation- advocate for social and economic justice, environmental activist, and ambassador to visitors from afar...for example, The Maori from New Zealand, the Mapuche from Santiago, Chile, the Samoans, the Australian Aborigines, Istanbul, Asia, and on and on.  Dr. Paul doesn't have many friends "Truth will do that" he states in his calm demeanor, crafting his words and phrases to have its most effect.  "That awful truth is sometimes hard for people to understand, or accept."

A Graduate of a prestigious private college in Western Canada, Dr. Paul received his diploma in human and social sciences, opting out of law studies. " I would rather advocate for the cause that would have lasting effects rather than reprersenting the interests of the accused in a legal system that that is based on what is just rather than what is right".

Often misunderstood as a radical and a trouble maker, Dr. Paul (purely honourary, of course), quickly puts things into perspective, "Being and Indian is, not only by blood- it is also a way of life...one that is connected to all things sacred, and sacred is all- it is our duty as people to protect the sacred elements, all of creation, that is our duty to the Creator, our obligation to our ancestors, and our responsibility to future generations".

So simple but so profound. He also adds,  "Hollywood romanticized Indian culture, as they have with pop culture, but our existence is as simple as the sun rising in the east, the birth of a buffalo calf, the painted sky in the sunset. These are gifts. It's that simple- to sacrifice and honour-based on our value systems of sharing, respect, trust, wisdom, patience, love, and humility."
These are our core values and are probably the same as other civilizations, I imagine. Sometimes protecting and advocating for these gifts may appear radical and hostilities emerge, labels attached, and fear manifests itself from this misunderstanding."
